Diospyros virginiana Prairie Star 'Claypool H-118' is one of the earliest ripening American persimmon producing extra large, very sweet, firm, and flavourful. It is also self-fertile and often seedless. The Asian persimmons, D. kaki, are one of the most popular fruits in Asia. Its eastern US relative, D. virginiana, is lesser known but much hardier to zone 4 and produce small 1-2 inch wide, orange to reddish-purple fruit that are eaten fresh when soft like a ripe tomato or used in syrups, jellies, ice creams, and pies.
