Diospyros virginiana Prairie Gem 'Claypool F-25' is a unique, early-ripening, seedless variety of American persimmon with beautiful, light orange fruit that is sweet and tender. The Claypool cultivars are self-fertile but may produce more fruit in the presence of a male clone. The Asian persimmons, D. kaki, are one of the most popular fruits in Asia. Its eastern US relative, D. virginiana, is lesser known but much hardier to zone 4 and produces small 1-2 inch wide, orange to reddish-purple fruit that are eaten fresh when soft like a ripe tomato or used in syrups, jellies, ice creams, and pies.
