Giant sea squill, Drimia (Urginea) maritima, is a big, bold bulb from the Mediterranean Basin. The bulbs can be the size of soccer balls and weigh 1 kg, the dramatic, rippled leaves can be 3 feet long, and the spikes of pure, white starry flowers - reminiscent of foxtail lilies (Eremurus) - can reach 4-6 feet tall. The thick, leathery foliage emerges in spring and goes dormant by fall which is when the flower stalks arise from the naked bulbs. A great cut flower or pot specimen. In cold climates, store it somewhere dry and frost-free or treat as a houseplant.
