Enkianthus campanulatus 'Showy Lantern' is a lovely, deciduous shrub native to Japan and a relative to rhododendrons. Commonly known as redvein enkianthus, it has an upright form of 6 to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Pendulous racemes of lovely, bell-shaped flowers appear in late spring in solid dark pink to reddish shades. Its dainty, deep green leaves turn scarlet in autumn. Thrives in part shade but expect the best fall colour in full sun. An excellent choice for the woodland garden. Attracts bees and hummingbirds. Plant in a protected situation in zone 4.
