Ficus carica 'Chicago Hardy' is one of the hardiest of all figs with stems hardy to -12 degrees Celsius and roots hardy to -29 degrees Celsius! Grow it in zone 6 or warmer or in zone 5 in a warm microclimate with winter protection and mulching. It will produce fruit on new wood even if knocked back to the ground in winter which is light brown to purplish with sweet, pink flesh ripening in late summer and early fall. Great for fresh eating, preserves, and drying. Also known as 'Bensonhurst Purple', this cultivar is originally from Sicily.
