Haemanthus namaquensis is a rare southern African bulb found only in a few locations with dramatic orange-red flowers with short petals and copious stamens that resemble a paintbrush on green to red stems. It has gorgeous bluish-green leaves that can be moderately to highly irregularly rippled. They are hard, waxy, and upright with variable burgundy striping at the base and up to 18 inches long. The leaves emerge just after the autumn flowering dormant in summer as the light green to reddish fruit form. Keep on the dry side when dormant in summer perhaps watering only once a month. Plant the bulb just below the surface or slightly exposed. This is a non-hardy bulb that can be grown as a houseplant or in a heated greenhouse or sunroom. It's perfect for those interested in bulbs and houseplants and for succulent lovers looking to branch out. Our nursery-grown bulbs are 5 years old and should reach blooming size around 6 years old.
