'Rhein Nixe' has lovely small to medium-sized flowers with icy white standards and warm raspberry violet purple falls edged and etched with white plus light yellow beards. Vigorous and floriferous, it blooms on 30 inch stems in the late mid season. Fragrant. The cultivar name in German would translate as 'Mermaid of the Rhine'. It is an heirloom iris introduced in 1910 and seems to have been shared by Prairie gardeners for decades. My plant came from my sister-in-law, Dani, who got it from her brother who got it from their mother. Thank you to Syreeta for providing the ID! Tall Bearded (TB) irises, previously known as Iris germanica, have greyish strap-like, pointed leaves from fleshy rhizomes and tall stems of gorgeous, often fragrant, flowers that come in every colour of the rainbow. Divide every two to three years (or when clumps become congested and flowering decreases) just after blooming. Trim the foliage back to a third and plant the rhizomes at or just below soil level. Deer and rabbit resistant.
