Macropidia fuliginosa is the fabled and fabulous black kangaroo paw. It is closely related to the kangaroo paws and cats paws from Anigozanthos but diverged from these relatives when it colonized a different soil type in their native Western Australia. It has similar strap-like, iris-like leaves and inflorescences but the stems are burgundy-black branching into heart stopping true black and light green, tubular flowers with flaring, reflexed petal lobes and exserted pistil and stamens. Tolerant of light frosts but best as a houseplant or greenhouse plant in winter.
