Magnolia ashei, also known as dwarf bigleaf magnolia and previously considered a subspecies of M. macrophylla, is medium-sized understory tree that generally will reach 15-20 feet tall. It has very fragrant, large, creamy-white flowers that are 10-12 inches across and display hints of maroon at the base in late spring. Foliage can reach up to two feet long or more and be almost 12 inches across. Think of it as a dwarf tree form of M. macrophylla suited as a specimen for smaller gardens. Pollinator attractor. Shelter from strong winds. In zone 6 protect when young until plants become well established. For the 2024 Rare Flowering Tree Pre-Order plants will be in 15cm pots and about 1 foot tall.
