Malus domestica 'Espalier Combination' has taken the guess work out of cross-pollination and the limits of growing food crops in small gardens. This combination apple tree can be trained to grow flat and horizontal against a wall, railing or fence in a sunny site where they will take up no space, look fantastic and provide delicious fruit in the fall. They can also be used a privacy screen. Your espalier will have at least four different cultivars on one tree in three rows grafted onto a dwarf to semi-dwarf root stock. Pollinator attractor. The photo is an old espaliered apple in the walled garden at the official royal residence of Hillsborough Castle, Northern Ireland. Yours will be a little smaller.
