Musa x paradisiaca is a sterile hybrid between M. acuminata and M. balbisiana grown for its tasty yellow-skinned fruit. We, in the north, also grow it for its tropical foliage flair. A fast growing, suckering perennial with huge, up to 8 feet long, paddle-shaped leaves. Yellow flowers with purple-red bracts bloom in summer on mature plants with the possibility of fruit following. After flowering and fruiting, the pseudo-stem dies with new shoots (suckers) emerging to form new stems. A fast grower, plant height can range from 7 to 25 feet tall. Prefers consistent moist, well-drained soil with heat, sun and humidity. Young plants prefer partial shade.
