Sciadopitys verticillata is an ancient species referred to as a living fossil because no close relatives have been found in the fossil record for 230 million years. Known as the Japanese umbrella pine, it is a beautiful conifer with long, thick, shiny, almost plastic-like, evergreen needles arranged on the branch tips like the spokes of an umbrella. Very slow growing and pyramidal in habit, it can make a beautiful and choice specimen in containers and small spaces or in larger gardens.
