Strumaria are dainty members of the Amaryllis family known as Cape snowflakes and are closely related to Hessea. They are rare in the wild known only from restricted populations. They have star-shaped or upward-facing bell-shaped flowers, some of which are fragrant. S. salteri is a cute and dainty species with glistening mid pink flowers with darker central bands that bloom in fall. The two shiny, dark green, prostrate leaves will emerge at or after flowering and remain in growth through to spring. Easy to grow in pots in a free-draining mix. Collect the copious seeds and plant immediately to build your colonies. Reduce watering when dormant in summer but do not allow to go bone dry. Plant the bulbs with the top level with the soil surface. This is a non-hardy bulb that can be grown as a houseplant or in a heated greenhouse or sunroom.
