SOUTH AFRICAN BULBS
For Pick-Up or Shipping from Late September to Late October
PLEASE DO NOT MIX PRE-ORDERS: The plants in each pre-order are only available for shipping or pick-up during a specific period each year. Orders for each pre-order must be placed separately from other pre-orders and our Main Catalogue.*

This section celebrates the diversity and beauty of South African bulbs. South Africa has a vast richness of bulb species. Some are fairly well known in Western horticulture but most remain at the fringes. A great number are exceedingly rare in cultivation. For many of the bulbs in this section, you wouldn't be just one of the few people in Canada to grow them but among the few people in the world! Have fun exploring these rarities as well as some of their better-known compatriots.

Local Customers: Choose "pick up" when you check out. We will email you when it is time to come in. Please add our email address mailorder@phoenixperennials.com to your address book to help our email get past your spam filter. Orders are held for four weeks. If not picked up, we will make your bulbs available to other customers, charge a 25% restocking fee, and refund the remainder through your original method of payment. We recommend against placing orders for potted plants from the main catalogue. Most plants should be available now for in-person shopping.
Mail Order Customers: Please do not mix plants from our Spring Bulb Pre-Order with other pre-orders or the Main Catalogue. These plants all ship at different times and require different packing. Most bulbs ship from late September to the end of October. The following genera usually do not ship until mid October: Cyclamen, Cypripedium, Eremurus, Galanthus, Gladiolus, Hippeastrum (Amaryllis), and Lilium. In general, rare bulbs always arrive to us and are shipped on to you later than conventional ones. Cold climate gardeners can prepare in advance for this. Bulbs and bare root can be planted in the ground as long as the soil is still workable. You can pre-dig holes and then mulch plantings well with a foot of fallen leaves. Or you can plant in pots and protect in a less freezing location such as a garage or slightly heated basement, shed or greenhouse for the first winter then plant out into the garden in spring. When you place your order, we assume you have read and understand the timing of our shipments.
Cancellations and Changes: Once plants are ordered, they are reserved for you and can’t be sold to anyone else. We view your order as a commitment you have made with us in good faith. For this reason, cancellations for full refund will only be accepted until September 1st, 2024. After that date you can choose to cancel for a refund minus a 25% restocking fee or cancel for a full store credit. If we are still within our stated shipping period, the lateness of the season or the weather in your region is not considered as a reason to not hold to our cancellation policy. By placing an order we assume you are aware of our shipping season. For small additions less than $25, please email us with your requests. For additions larger than $25, please place a new order then notify us by email so we can connect your orders.

Flat Rate Shipping for Bulbs**
Flat rate shipping applies to orders that include packaged bulbs and bare root only. Note that some plants in this pre-order are potted rather than packaged. Potted plants will list a pot size rather than the number of bulbs per pack. Orders that include pots might not be eligible for flat rate shipping.

When you place your order, our system will calculate a quoted rate. Just before we ship we will adjust your rate based on the table below and refund the difference.

Bulb/Bare Root Total BC Prairies/Territories Ont/PQ Atlantic
$25-$100 $22 $24 $26 $28
$100-$200 $24 $26 $28 $30

*Mixed orders will be charged an administrative fee of $5 per pre-order/main catalogue order to cover our costs of separating and organizing your orders. As a rule, all pre-orders ship separately due to timing and different packing requirements. In some cases we may be able to combine some pre-orders to ship together if you send us a detailed email listing all of your orders. While we will do our best, we cannot guarantee that any pre-orders will ship together.
**Applies to shipments of packaged dry bulbs only. If potted or extra heavy bulbs or other potted plants are included in your order, the rate quoted by the shopping cart system will apply. Please note that Cypripedium and Dactylorhiza must ship as soon as possible for the health of the rhizomes. We cannot hold these orchids to wait for later-arriving bulbs and may need to make multiple shipments with a possible increase in shipping to cover our costs.
