Description Fine Print

Brunsvigia orientalis is a dramatic species similar to B. josephinae and B. litoralis known as Cape candelabra lily. It blooms in fall at about 18 inches tall with open umbels of up to 50 bright red to coral red flowers on burgundy-red stems. The six, large, tongue-like, bright green prostrate leaves follow and remain through winter. They lie flat on the ground and have a velvety texture. Keep lightly watered to dry when dormant in summer but maintain some moisture through winter to support the foliage. Plant the large bulbs with the neck protruding above the soil. This is a non-hardy bulb that can be grown as a houseplant or in a heated greenhouse or sunroom. It's perfect for those interested in bulbs and houseplants and for succulent lovers looking to branch out. Our nursery-grown bulbs are 3 years old as of 2023 and can reach blooming size around 6-8 years old. Until then the foliage will be fantastic.
