Haemanthus humilis ssp. humilis is a beautiful South African bulb known as rabbit's ears with broad tongue-shaped, vertically held leaves up to 12 inches long and 5 inches wide usually smooth or hairy above and hairy beneath. The deep pink flowers of Rhodes Form number 20-120 flowers per umbel rising above the foliage on red stems in mid to late summer followed by white to orange fruit. New leaves are usually produced around or just after flowering. Maintain reasonable moisture but allowing the well-drained medium to dry between waterings reducing moisture in winter to fairly dry. Plant the bulb just below the surface or slightly exposed. This is a non-hardy bulb that can be grown as a houseplant or in a heated greenhouse or sunroom. It's perfect for those interested in bulbs and houseplants and for succulent lovers looking to branch out. Tolerant of cool temperatures possibly to zone 8 but safest protected from freezing. Our nursery-grown bulbs are 2 years old as of 2023. They reach adult blooming size at 5-6 years old.
