Brunsvigia striata is a beautiful smaller species mainly from the winter rainfall region of the western Cape with large umbels of 8-30 light to mid pink flowers. The flowers bloom at 6-14 inches high in late summer to mid fall. The bulbs are about 4-5 centimetres across and produce 4-6 large, elliptical, leathery, tongue-like leaves often with attractive red margins and lie flat on the ground. The leaves appear after flowering, grow through winter and spring and go dormant in summer. Keep on the dry side when dormant in summer perhaps watering only once a month. Plant the bulbs with the neck protruding above the soil. This is a non-hardy bulb that can be grown as a houseplant or in a heated greenhouse or sunroom. It's perfect for those interested in bulbs and houseplants and for succulent lovers looking to branch out. The seeds for these plants were collected in Gifberg where the population has leaves with a beautiful red margin. Our nursery-grown bulbs are 6 years old as of 2022 which is about adult blooming size.
