Cyrtanthus falcatus is a beautiful South African bulb known as falcate firelily or shepherd's crook. It flowers in late spring and summer at 12 inches high with clusters of 8-10 pendulous red, green and creamy yellow striped trumpets with sweet fragrance. It is an amaryllis relative with long, strap-like leaves that grows well as a pot plant. In its native habitat it grows on vertical cliffs. Allow it to dry out between deep waterings when in growth and keep dry when dormant in winter, though it is tolerant of some winter moisture. Plant with the neck of the bulb protruding from the soil. Best to protect from freezing. Our nursery-grown bulbs are 5 years old as 2023 and getting close to adult blooming size. Photo: Wikimedia.
