Hylomecon japonica is a rare species of poppy for the shade garden grown for its single, saucer-shaped flowers of glowing yellow that are produced from late spring to early summer. The light green. toothed foliage serves as an excellent backdrop. After flowering, the tight clump of leaves die back as the underground tubers go into dormancy until next spring. Will happily naturalize. Use in a woodland or wild garden setting or for shady corners. Needs moist but well drained soil that is moderately fertile and neutral to slightly acidic.
